Description

This Nicaraguan Pottery Vase measures 20" tall. It features an amazing "Incised Line" pattern hand carved in relief making it a stunning and artistic addition to any home decor.
Features
  • Our pottery comes from San Juan de Oriente, a village about 45 minutes away from Nicaragua's capital, Managua, where potters are well known for their excellent clay work. For the most part, all the artisans in this village work in small family groups. Their art is a tradition passed on from generation to generation. Making pottery begins with the preparation of the clay and shaping of each individual piece. Pieces are polished to remove stone, smooth the surface and leave it ready for the application of color. When polishing is finished a black or white coat is applied to the pieces. They are then left to dry anywhere from 2 to 10 hours. Once dried, the pieces are polished again. Designs are drawn onto the pieces with a pencil using different colored oxides. Colors are applied with paint brushes. After each color is applied, the pieces are smoothed, polished and left to dry for 2 to 6 days. Firing takes 8 to 9 hours in kilns that the artisans have built. When the kiln has cooled, pieces are removed and shined with a soft cloth to bring out a bright shine.
